History of The Electrical Institute

Maine Electrical Institute was born from a vision and desire for a more efficient means of obtaining the education mandated by the state. Adam Lee, our founding director, and Matthew Flaherty, the CEO, recognized the need for a clearer pathway for students to navigate.

Adam moved away from Maine to serve in the U.S. Army, and after completing his service, became a licensed electrician in Washington State. Upon returning to Maine, he discovered that the states did not have reciprocal agreements, which created many obstacles to becoming licensed in Maine.

Meanwhile, Matthew Flaherty, owner of a large electrical contracting business, faced his own challenges. It was difficult to find qualified, licensed electricians because the educational requirements were unclear to many, and the options were limited.

Working together, in 2019, Adam and Matthew developed a curriculum and a state-of-the-art facility that was approved by the state of Maine. Since then, MEI has created both online and in-person courses that can be pursued even while working full-time and supporting a family.

To further address educational needs, the school expanded to become a licensed educational provider in New Hampshire and several other states, and is now also doing business as The Electrical Institute.

Since opening in 2019 with nine students, we have supported hundreds of students to acquire the education needed to become a skilled workforce, obtain licensure, and earn a good wage.
